Chess Club

The chess club meets every Tuesday at lunch in the Home Ec Lab. The club is open to anybody who wants to play for fun or for those who want to join our school team. This year we are planning on holding two in-school tournaments. One will be a chess ladder tournament, while the other one will be a tournament based on win points to determine the best chess player from each grade. Students will also have the opportunity to play Chinese and Japanese Chess.

Update! September 24, 2003

Chess Club started two weeks ago. Participation is a little on the low side right now. Hopefully, this will change. This year the school team is planning to participate in more tournaments. If you are interested in playing a little chess, come by and play somebody. You don't have to join the club or any team.

Update! April 6, 2003

The Grade 8 team did very well considering none of the players had ever been to a chess tournament. Austin H. came in 3rd place and took home a trophy. He also made it to the Provincial Finals. Good Luck, Austin, and do us proud. It was also good to run into Matthew G. who was in our chess club last year. He also qualified for the Provincial Finals.

Update! March 15, 2003

The CDGMS Chess Ladder will end April 10th. After that, we will concentrate on preparing to host our annual chess tournament. After our annual chess tournament is over, we will start our final in-school tournament to determine the top players for this year in each grade. The winners of this tournament will receive a handsome trophy and have their names immortalized on the big perpetual plaque.

Grade 8 students will be preparing for the Surrey Chess Challenge for secondary-aged students to be held on the 5th of April at Queen Elizabeth Secondary, Surrey, BC.

Update! February 9, 2003

The chess ladder tournament is progressing well. It will last for another month or so. Meanwhile, Mr. Sakai will be looking for those interested in joining the school chess team. Our team will be competing in at least one event this year. Plans are under way to eventually host a tournament right here at CDGMS. It would be open to all schools who have players in grades 6, 7, and 8.

Update! January 8th, 2003

The 2nd Annual CDGMS Chess Ladder Tournament will commence on Thursday, January 9th, 2003. All interested students have until the 16th to sign up for the tournament. Trophies will be awarded to the top three students. Check the bulletin board in the library conference room for rules and regulations. If you are interested in joining the chess ladder, see Mr. Sakai and he'll make sure you get on.

Six students entered the competition that was held in Surrey, BC on March 1, 2003..

Four of the students were from grade six and two were from grade seven. Tim A. and Peter W., both from grade six, earned the right to go on to compete in the Provincial Finals.

Only two out of the six students had previous experience with chess tournaments. Now that they've had a taste of what it's all about, they can't wait to participate in more events.
