Classroom Expectations and Procedures
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Your son/daughter is currently participating in the Home Economics
portion
of
the Life Skills program. Due to the "hands on" nature of this course,
the
majority the student's work will be done during class time and
consequently
they will not generally have homework. Student's will receive one
assignment
during the course that will require them to do some work at home.
Dear Student: WELCOME TO HOME ECONOMICS
You will be spending approximately 9 weeks in this Explorations
class.
You will have classes 3 times a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
You
will have theory lessons and practical lessons or cooking labs. You
will
work closely with a group of 4-6 students in the same kitchen
unit/group
on Wednesdays and a group of 3-4 students in the same sewing unit/group
on
Thursdays.
Because each class is only 48 minutes long, efficient use of time is
very
important. During the lab classes each group will have a Team Leader.
Duties
for the Team leader are as follows:
Pick up the recipe sheets and handouts for the group distribute them to
each group member
Assign each person duties in the group
Keep things running smoothly in your kitchen unit
Organize efficient use of the groups sewing machine
We will rotate Team Leaders throughout your classes. A schedule will be posted.
1. Bring your Home Economics binder or duotang and a pen or pencil to every class.
2. On Lab (cooking) days put books under the counters behind the demo table, tie back hair, wash hands with soap, put apron on, be seated at your table and wait for instructions to begin.
3. When finished, clean up after yourself. Do not leave your kitchen area until the teacher has done an inspection and dismissed you.
4. Follow directions given by the teacher and the Team Leader. Do not use any equipment until instructed to do so by the teacher.
5. Work without disrupting others. Be pleasant and polite.
6. Be on time for class.
7. If you miss class, catch up on the missed assignments and collect the handouts. If you miss a cooking lab you may be required to make the recipe at home under the supervision of your parent.
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Students will be marked on promptness, organization of work, use of
equipment,
observation of safety rules, quality of product, clean up,
participation,
cooperation with others, tests and quizzes and their assignment.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Your son/daughter will be participating in sewing as part of the home economics program. In this course, students will be working on a project that will require some supplies and equipment.
In order to help get students started on time, the school has purchased the necessary fabric, thread, and other supplies. Students may purchase these supplies from the school for ten dollars and fifty cents ($10.50).
Some students may want to bring their own fabric and supplies from
home,
and this is fine. Please send the following supplies to class in a
large
zip-lock bag
with your child's name and division
GRADE 6 GYM BAG PROJECT
You will need:
GRADE 7 APRON PROJECT
You will need: (prewash fabric)
GRADE 8 BOXER SHORTS PROJECT
You will need:
SHOPPING HINTS:
1. Higher quality threads tend to last longer and break less often.
2. Go for whatever colour or pattern you like anything
goes.
Make it fun!
3. Most fabric stores give discounts for school projects. Bring
this
paper
with you to allow the store staff to help you. If you can spare some
time,
we really need parent helpers for sewing.
ALL STUDENTS WILL ALSO NEED TO BRING:
1. a one-inch binder or duo tang
2. two dividers
3. a loonie to cover the cost of bobbins and machine needles
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. If you have any
questions
regarding this program, please call me at the school (852-9616).
Thank you,
Paul Lilly
